48 Hours in Essex: The Remarriage Stag Spectacular 🍻

You don’t usually associate Essex with redemption arcs, but that’s exactly what we stumbled on — a stag weekend for a top lad heading back down the aisle for round two. Divorce might’ve wiped the slate clean, but Essex painted it in bold strokes. And guess what? We rocked up by train — cheap, cheerful, and zero stress — because that’s how honourable gents do it.

Day 1: Leigh-on-Sea Kick-Off & Fish ’n’ Chips Fuel

First stop, The Mayflower pub in Leigh-on-Sea. This local gem’s got bags of character – a cosy place with real ale on tap and cracking fish and chips served either inside, on the terrace by the water, or via the good old front chippy hatch.

The lads tucked into flaky cod and chunky chips faster than you can say “down the hatch.” Proper grub, no fuss, warm vibe – just what’s needed to start the weekend.

Night fell on Leigh’s high street — a pint here, a laugh there — before we hopped into an Uber to Southend for sleep, plotting our next day of aftermath.

Day 2: Seaside Shenanigans & Shoebury’s Best Café

We rolled out at sunrise and hit the coast — but not Southend Pier. We headed to Shoebury East Beach for a bit of open-air therapy. This pebbly-sand Blue Flag beach is exactly what you need after a few pints — bracing sea air, clean family vibes, and beach huts to gawp at. Perfect pre-lunch playground for the groom and his entourage.

Lunch was a laid-back affair at East Beach Cafe. Not your typical greasy beach shack — this place has been designed with a clean, light-filled spec that’s welcoming, spotless, and a solid choice for days out with family and friends. We had local beers, fresh bites, way too much dessert, and chatted over surf, sun, and the best man’s speech drafts (some still in progress).

Day 3: Southend Finale with Italian Flair

We took the train back into Southend and headed to Padrino’s Restaurant for dinner, perched seaside with good atmosphere, friendly pro service, reasonable prices — and real Italian pizza that stacks up way better than a pile of Domino’s boxes. No posh nonsense, just classic Italian done right — think generous portions, warm vibe, views of the estuary. Exactly the classy yet easygoing seaside dinner spot you need after to top off a perfect weekend.

The Loaded Verdict

48 hours, 3 venues, one groom’s journey from past to future.

  • The Mayflower? Proper local pub with banging fish & chips and real ales.

  • Shoebury East Beach plus East Beach Cafe? Blue Flag surrounds and bright, clean cafĂ© vibes serving proper good nosh.

  • Padrino’s? Friendly and authentic Italian food with a sea-view send-off.

Surprisingly, Essex proved the perfect backdrop for a 40+ stag (precise age undisclosed), that needed a little adult magic before the next chapter of his youth. Old school pubs, slick coastal cafes, and solid Italian hospitality — who’d’ve thought it? This one goes out to the lad getting remarried. Here’s to second chances, proper fare, and mates who show up. Boom.
