48 Hours in Venice (with a Toddler!)
Right then, Venice. The city of canals, gondolas, masks, and mad prices for coffee. You’re thinking romantic break, floaty dresses, and some lad with a straw hat singing love songs. What you’re not thinking is: “let’s bring the toddler.” But that’s exactly what we did, and somehow, it was glorious. Key to the magic? Generator Venice.

Now before you roll your eyes at the word “hostel”, stick with me. This isn’t some grim dorm full of gap year ghosts and dodgy bunk beds. Generator Venice is a legit game changer. You’ll find it bang on the waterfront of Giudecca Island, just a quick Vaporetto ride from the main madness of San Marco. Think chilled vibes, million-dollar views, and prices that don’t make your wallet cry. Three nights here as a family of three, and we were converted.

The building used to be a warehouse, and it still carries that old-school swagger, with its stone fireplace, mosaic floors, actual chandeliers (yes, plural), and high ceilings that make you feel like you’re in some Venetian palace… (not a place with dorm beds available). But here’s the kicker, the private deluxe king room is perfect for families. Ours had enough space to park the buggy, stash the snacks, and not trip over a Paw Patrol toy every five seconds.

Then there’s the brekkie bonus- the most important meal when you've got a toddler running on chaos and crumbs. Served up every morning on a massive 100-year-old harvest table, the buffet was top drawer. Fresh bread, eggs, fruit, good coffee, and enough Nutella to fuel a small country. You can even take it out onto the Giudecca Terrace, where your little one can wave at passing boats while you sip your cappuccino and pretend you’re in a Fellini film.

The best part? The staff. These lot genuinely give a toss. Honestly, it was like staying with mates who just happen to run a beautiful hostel in one of the world’s most stunning cities.
Come evening, Generator shifts gear. Rhe bar comes alive, the lighting goes moody, and there’s a Happy Hour that’d make even the most exhausted parent perk up. It’s good to feel like a big kid again and it’s ridiculously romantic, even with a baby monitor in your back pocket.

Venice itself? Still a stunner. Doge’s Palace, Rialto Bridge, and all the usual suspects were just a short boat ride away. We hit the must-sees, fed pigeons in St Mark’s Square, and even managed a gondola ride without a meltdown. Not bad for a couple knackered Brits and their pint-sized dictator.

So, here’s the verdict: Generator Venice is the ultimate family surprise package. It’s stylish, warm, wildly affordable, and kid friendly. Who knew a hostel would end up being the best bloody family hotel we’ve ever stayed in?
Venice with a toddler? Don’t just survive it. Smash it. Generator-style
