Madagascar- Wild, Weird, Wonderful.

By fred spanner

An island like no other, Madagascar is where nature went rogue, in the best possible way. Think lush rainforests teeming with lemurs, otherworldly baobab trees, and beaches that look like they’ve been Photoshopped. Whether you’re hiking through misty highlands, snorkelling over coral reefs, or just soaking in the laid-back island vibes, Madagascar serves up a truly off-the-grid adventure. Exotic, raw, and packed with surprises, this is one holiday destination that doesn’t play by the rules.

Antananarivo is the largest city in the country and sits high in the central highlands, blending French colonial architecture with buzzing local markets and hillside views.

What to do:

Explore the Royal Palace (Rova of Antananarivo)

Perched atop the city’s highest hill, the Rova offers a peek into Madagascar’s royal past. The site includes the Queen’s Palace and sweeping views over the capital which is awesome for history buffs and Instagrammers alike.

Wander Through Analakely Market

Dive headfirst into the hustle and bustle of Tana’s central market. It’s loud, colourful, chaotic, and full of local flavour. From fresh produce to handmade crafts, it’s a sensory overload in the best way.

Visit Lemurs’ Park

Just outside the city, this private reserve gives you a chance to see several species of Madagascar’s iconic lemurs in a lush, natural setting. It’s a great intro to the island’s unique wildlife, with no machete required.

Take a Stroll Around Lake Anosy

This heart-shaped lake is a calm escape from the city buzz. Framed by jacaranda trees and featuring a striking WWI memorial in the centre, it’s a peaceful spot for a lazy walk or people-watching with a local snack in hand.

Where to eat:

La Varangue

Fine dining with a side of colonial swagger. This joint’s like eating in a museum, but with better lighting and a killer wine list. Go for the zebu steak, stay for the vintage typewriters and old-school charm. Date night? Nailed it.

Kudeta

Hip, sleek, and cooler than your ex’s playlist. Kudeta’s where the city’s movers and shakers sip cocktails and smash French-Malagasy fusion that’ll make your taste buds high-five. Bonus: the duck confit here slaps.

Le Carré

If you're craving something posh but not pretentious, this is your spot. Think sushi, steak, and snazzy décor that says “I’m classy” without screaming it. Solid for a long lunch or a cheeky nightcap.

Chez Aina

Tucked away and local as it gets—this little gem dishes out Malagasy home cooking that hits like a hug from your nan (if your nan cooked with coconut, cassava, and spice). Cheap, cheerful, and finger-licking authentic.

Where to drink:

Le Taxi Be

Retro, rowdy, and dripping with local attitude. This bar-slash-club is where the night kicks off and possibly spirals. Cocktails flow, beats drop, and there’s usually someone dancing questionably by midnight. Perfect chaos.

No Comment Bar

The name says it all. It’s cool, mysterious, and full of beautiful people who pretend not to care. A magnet for expats, creatives, and the “I’m in a band” types. Grab a local rum cocktail, park yourself on the terrace, and people-watch like a pro.

Mojo by Le Point

If you're after slick vibes and stiff drinks, this one's a winner. Swanky décor, solid DJs, and a cocktail list that actually delivers. Dress up, roll in late, and literally order something with fire in it.

Glacier

Tana’s old-school institution. Bit of a wild card; half café, half late-night watering hole, but it’s always buzzing. Order a THB (Three Horses Beer), get some greasy snacks, and embrace the beautiful madness. Bonus: it never sleeps.
