Loaded is back and so are the 90’s
It’s 30 years since the first issue of Loaded hit newsagent shelves and while we’re acutely aware the world has moved on since the ‘90s, anyone watching Gladiators on primetime Saturday night television could be forgiven for thinking nothing has changed… even Shadow is still in hot water. We’re not aiming to completely turn the clock back but a magazine dedicated to life, liberty and the pursuit of sex, drink, football and less serious matters seems like a really good idea right now, doesn’t it? If the French were pulling this shit and calling it Lóaded everyone would be saying how carefree and cool they are. So while the enshittification of everything gathers pace, perhaps there’s nothing wrong with having a wee reset and, well, being a bit more ‘90s – this lot certainly are…
[xhead] The return of Baywatch
The 2017 Baywatch movie may have been hit or miss, but that hasn’t stopped Fox in the US from ordering an action-packed reboot of the ‘90s LA coastguard drama with “daring ocean rescues, pristine beaches, and iconic red bathing suits”. Baywatch ran from 1989 to 1999 and the new version will retain the same team of producers from the original, who we can only hope won’t be caught in Speedos.
[xhead] Gary Oldman is still brilliant
Gary Oldman was Loaded’s first cover star back in May 1994, shoehorned between his memorable performances as dreadlocked pimp Drexl Spivey in True Romance and co-starring alongside Jean Reno in French action thriller Léon. Fast forward to today and he’s currently holding Apple TV+ together, while seemingly having the time of his life playing Jackson Lamb in the spy thriller Slow Horses. Gary, we salute you.
[xhead] Back to Blairism
Say what you like about Keir Starmer – as I’m sure we will over the coming weeks and months – but we can’t blame him for looking back to the most successful period in his party’s history for a winning formula. Yes, Blairism is back – for good and bad – virtually 30 years to the day when Tony and Gordon met to decide who would become Labour leader and eventually the next Prime Minister.
[xhead] Liam Gallagher performing Definitely Maybe
Released by Oasis on August 29th, 1994, Definitely Maybe is rightly regarded as one of the greatest British albums ever made. Now, 30 years on Gallagher has been busy going on tour and making it happen all over again, performing the album in its entirety to a new generation of fans (and some old ones). Catch him headlining Reading and Leeds in August – again, virtually 30 years to the day when Definitely Maybe went on sale.
[xhead] ‘90s supermodels en vogue… again
There was a time when supermodels Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, and Christy Turlington had the fashion world at their feet. Think of it a bit like Fergie’s class of ‘92 only with fewer outfits from JJB Sports. Well, in case you missed it, Apple TV recently gave them their own docuseries, aptly named The Super Models and a second season reportedly starring Kate Moss could be on the way.
[xhead] The Spice Girls making headlines
Campbell and co. weren’t the only ones spreading the good word of girl power – the Spice Girls were also preparing for world domination in 1994 before dominating the charts – and The Box music channel – with debut single ‘Wannabe’ two years later. They’re still front-page news of course, although I’m sure Ginger wishes she wasn’t. Spice World!
