What A Way To Enjoy Football
That’s no way to watch football, a mate of mine said when I told him I was going to watch England play Finland at Wembley whilst being wined and dined in the ultimate hospitality experience.
According to my mate, the sage of all things football (in particular Calcio – the history of Italian football, don’t ask!) you have to suffer for your sport in order to enjoy the game and that defines the difference between winning or losing a game. Really?!
It’s been many years since football was pre-Taylor report stands, male dominated terraces, alcohol buzzed and washed down with a lukewarm warm meat and spud pie, and things have quite rightly changed.
Grounds are more welcoming, they are clean and safe for one thing and appeal to a wider audience. The football hospitality market has boomed over the last twenty years and from grass roots to Wembley you can find hospitality packages at almost every ground you go to – but Wembley have stepped it up a notch with the ultimate package.
It’s called Experiences by Wembley Stadium in the Booby Moore suite and is a rebrand of their forerunner called Club Wembley.
I was told to get there early to get the most out of the experience and I’m glad I did. Champagne reception, live music from a really cool band whilst Arsenal legend Paul Merton and former Southampton star Ryan Bertrand provided on stage entertainment with a lively Q & A.
Sat at your own table you’re treated to a magnificent three course meal with yet more champagne. Oh, and wine and beer if you prefer!
There was that little thing called the England Vs Finland match and although the opposition was at best weak, it was captain Harry Kane’s 100th cap so it was always going to be a night to remember. The plush seats were bang on the half way line and just above the dug out, the best seats in the house (note to mate!).
The first half wasn’t exactly memorable but for Experiences by Wembley Stadium guests there were delicious (and not lukewarm) pies waiting for us on our table, complete with more champagne!
The second half was more lively and to crown Harry’s Kane’s 100th appearance he scored two cracking goals. Yes I know it was against Finland but come on give the man a break!
After the match we were treated to cheese and biscuits and drinks, what a night. So, despite what my mate said this was an incredible experience and an amazing way to see modern football. Come on England!
