Hair Loss Myths Busters: What Men Really Need to Know

There are countless myths surrounding hair loss and how to treat it. From miracle oils and supplements to the belief that going bald is simply an unavoidable part of getting older, it can be difficult to separate sound hair-health advice from internet folklore.  

The reality is more complicated. Different types of hair loss have different causes; what works for one person may be inappropriate for another.

Male pattern hair loss, for example, is largely genetic and linked to sensitivity to DHT, while excessive shedding can also be triggered by factors such as stress, illness, rapid weight loss or nutritional deficiencies.

Here, Marie-Royce Book, a trichologist and patient advisor at  The Wimpole Clinic, separates the hair-loss facts from the fiction.

MYTH: What You Eat Has Nothing to Do With Your Hair

“Nutrition and lifestyle can play an important role in hair health. Poor nutrition and excessive alcohol intake can affect general health and may contribute to problems with hair growth and shedding.

The key nutrients I always consider in clinic are vitamin D, iron, zinc, protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Vitamin D, iron and zinc all have important roles in normal cell function and hair growth, while protein provides the building blocks for keratin, the main structural protein in hair.

If someone is experiencing unexplained shedding, checking levels of key nutrients can be important. Addressing low iron or vitamin D, for example, may be appropriate if these are thought to contribute to hair shedding or poor hair health.

Biotin deficiency is very rare, so for most people biotin supplements do not make a visible difference. I would always recommend looking at the overall diet rather than relying on a shelf full of supplements.

Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties and support general health, so including sources such as oily fish, walnuts and flaxseed as part of a balanced diet is sensible.

Hydration is important for general health and skin, but drinking extra water does not directly stimulate hair follicles – that is a myth.”

MYTH: Home Remedies Can Reverse Hair Loss

“Apple cider vinegar rinses may help remove product build-up, but they are not a treatment for hair loss. They can also irritate the scalp, particularly if they are too concentrated or not diluted enough.

Some small studies suggest that natural oils such as rosemary or pumpkin seed oil have potential benefits, but the evidence is not strong enough to compare them with clinically established treatments such as minoxidil. They are best viewed as supportive rather than replacements for evidence-based treatments.

MYTH: Stress and Lifestyle Don't Affect Your Hair

“Lifestyle factors can play a role in hair health and excessive shedding. Physical and psychological stress can trigger telogen effluvium, a common form of temporary shedding, while factors such as poor sleep and general health may also influence the hair cycle.

This doesn't mean that stress or a poor lifestyle will make every man go bald. Genetically driven male pattern hair loss has a different underlying mechanism. However, if you're experiencing more shedding than usual, it's important to look at the bigger picture rather than simply blaming your shampoo.

Improving sleep, managing stress, exercising regularly and maintaining a balanced diet can all support general health and healthy hair. If shedding persists, however, it's worth investigating the underlying cause rather than assuming lifestyle is solely responsible.”

MYTH: Going Bald is Simply a Fact of Getting Older

“Male pattern baldness is the most common form of hair loss in men and is largely driven by genetics and sensitivity to the hormone DHT. It typically causes a receding hairline, thinning at the crown, or both, and can gradually progress over time.

The important thing is not to accept hair loss as inevitable. There are treatments that can slow progression and, in some cases, improve density, particularly when started early.

Topical minoxidil is one of the main medical treatments used for male pattern hair loss. It works by prolonging the growth phase of the hair cycle and can help maintain existing hairs and improve their thickness and coverage in some men. It needs to be used consistently, and any benefits are generally maintained only while treatment continues. Results vary from person to person, and it is most useful when there are still active, functioning follicles to respond to treatment.

Finasteride is another medical treatment for male pattern baldness. It works by reducing the conversion of testosterone to DHT, the hormone involved in the miniaturisation of susceptible hair follicles. It is available as an oral tablet and, in some settings, as a topical treatment. However, it is not suitable for everyone and should be discussed with a qualified medical professional, who can explain the potential benefits, risks and side effects.

Other medical and non-surgical options may also be appropriate for some men, but treatment needs to be tailored to the individual, taking into account the pattern and extent of hair loss, medical history and long-term goals.

The earlier a man seeks advice, the more options there are. Once a follicle has become significantly miniaturised over time, it can become much harder to restore its previous level of growth and density.”

MYTH: Hair Loss is Mainly a Male Problem

“Hair thinning is also common in women, and hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause can affect the hair cycle and make female pattern hair loss more noticeable.

As women move through menopause, changes in hormone levels can influence hair growth, density and texture. Female pattern hair loss can present as gradual thinning, particularly around the parting and crown.

Treatments that may be considered include topical minoxidil, while options such as PRP and low-level light therapy may be useful for some female and male patients. Results can vary, and treatment should be tailored to the individual and the underlying cause of the hair loss.

Newer regenerative approaches, including treatments such as polynucleotides and microneedling, are offered for hair loss in both sexes, but the evidence base is still developing and remains more limited than for established treatments.

Hair transplants can be an option for both men and women, but only if the donor area is strong and the pattern and cause of hair loss make transplantation appropriate. Women with diffuse thinning may benefit more from medical or non-surgical approaches.

As with men, the psychological impact of hair loss in women is very real. Hair loss can significantly affect confidence and wellbeing, and recognising and validating this is an important part of care.”

MYTH: A Hair Transplant is the Only Way to Treat Hair Loss

“At-home red light devices may be helpful for some patients when used consistently, although results can vary. Low-level light therapy can be considered as an option, particularly for people with early-stage thinning.

Microneedling is another treatment being investigated as an adjunct for certain types of hair loss. It creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin and may help stimulate the local environment around the follicles and improve the absorption of topical treatments. When combined with treatments such as PRP, it may be appropriate for selected patients, but results vary.

Where follicles have been permanently lost or significantly miniaturised, transplantation may be an appropriate way of restoring coverage in suitable patients.

A transplant does not cure the underlying cause of hair loss, so protecting existing hair and considering how to manage progressive hair loss should form part of the overall treatment plan. For suitable patients, transplantation can provide a long-term way of restoring coverage where follicles have been permanently lost or significantly miniaturised. The best approach depends on the individual's age, pattern and rate of hair loss, donor supply and long-term expectations.  

The Bottom Line

“Hair loss isn't one condition, and there isn't one solution. The most important thing is to establish why the hair is changing before reaching for supplements, home remedies or surgery.

For some people, the answer may be correcting a nutritional deficiency or managing stress. For others, it may be genetic hair loss that requires a longer-term treatment strategy.

The earlier the cause is identified, the more opportunity there is to preserve and support existing hair while the follicles are still active.”
