Ah, the thought of a peaceful life down on the farm. A couple of sheep, a few cow’s udders to milk and a dozen chickens for that morning sunny side up. It’s what dreams are made of. No robots, laptops or racing rats to learn the latest tech tactics.
The latest superhot brainiac to grace the pages of Loaded, Janna Breslin, swapped city life for survival mode, trading in the urban California dream for a full-blown off-grid life in rural Tennessee and she’s absolute proof the pudding is where the greener grass is.
Hop over ya neighbour’s fence and come munch with us where pastures are profitable and life is for living…
Janna fought off infestations of brown recluse spiders and dealt with an uncooperative farm, but she took it all in her stride. Along with hubby Evan, she’s building a business empire. Their hit show Modern Homestead documents the ups and downs on Amazon Prime Video as the unflappable pair share unfiltered advice on how to live a life of freedom—physically, mentally, and financially.
Is going really off-grid really worth it? We think so, but we dived into the haystack with Janna to dig a bit deeper for you, of course.
Tell us about Modern Homestead. How did you guys come to live off grid and why?
Modern Homestead started as a dream—a desire for my husband, Evan and me to have a place of our own. For years, we’d talked about finding a little spot where we could escape if and when the shit hit the fan. Then COVID happened, and it became clear that this wasn’t just a nice idea—it was something we needed to do.
The show chronicles our journey from urban California to rural Tennessee, and let me tell you, we were so ill-equipped to be off-grid. We had no real skills for living completely off the grid, and everything went to hell almost immediately. The cabin on the property? Infested with thousands of brown recluse spiders, riddled with irreparable termite damage, and full of black mold. Our ponds dried up, the cows had no water. We were one dead dog away from living out a tragic country song.
That’s where the Modern part of Modern Homestead comes in. Evan likes to say that, just like Mark Watney in The Martian, when faced with overwhelming odds, we had one choice: “We needed to science the shit out of this.” And that’s exactly what we did—and what we continue to do. From building sustainable systems to integrating cutting-edge technology, we’re proving that even two people with no idea what they’re doing can create a homestead that thrives. It’s been messy, it’s been hard, and it’s been the most rewarding thing we’ve ever done.
* Give us 3 quick tips for boosting dopamine
Boosting dopamine doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does require action. My motto, Get the Fuck Outside, applies perfectly here because nature has a way of resetting our minds and bodies. Here are my three quick tips:
-
Get Cold: Yes, I know, ice baths are everywhere on social media right now, and I’m sure we’re all a little tired of seeing them—but they work. That blast of cold not only wakes you up but also gives your dopamine levels a serious boost. If you can do it outside, even better! You’re hitting two dopamine triggers at once.
-
Get Outside: Even if it’s just for a short walk, put your phone down and step outside. Whether it’s around the block or in a park, nature has this amazing way of grounding us. I always feel better after some fresh air, and it’s a great way to recharge without overcomplicating your day.
-
Sex: Super simple and still one of the best ways to increase dopamine. It’s nature’s original mood booster. Plus, let’s be honest—who doesn’t feel better after a little action?
These aren’t groundbreaking tips, but they’re effective, easy to do, and most importantly, they work. So, what are you waiting for? Get the fuck outside!
* For those living in cities, how can they get outside and benefit from nature? You guys make it look easy, but running the rat race can be a hard slog, especially during winter
Look, I get it—getting outside in winter, especially in colder climates, can be a bit of a challenge. But let’s be real: suck it up, buy a sweater, or move. We are not meant to live inside like houseplants. Our bodies, like every other biological organism, rely on cues from the sun. The angle of sunlight and its light frequencies set our biological rhythms. The more time you spend indoors under artificial lights, the more you’re fucking up your system.
I run multiple companies, which means there’s plenty of time spent inside. But we make it a priority to work with as much natural light as possible in our offices. Plus, we schedule two-mile walk breaks throughout the day to reset. Here’s the thing: the average person can walk a mile in under 15 minutes, so even if you’re stuck in a cubicle, you can use one of your breaks to get the fuck outside and go for a quick walk.
And if it’s cold? Sweaters on Amazon are pretty cheap. The bottom line is: your health is worth a little discomfort. Get outside, feel the sun on your face, and reconnect with the world around you. Your body—and your sanity—will thank you!
* Why Tennessee?
I grew up in California, and let’s be honest—it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world. Beaches, mountains, forests—it’s got it all. But then there’s the other stuff: the politics, the taxes, and the fact that the state loses nearly 700 people a day who are fed up and moving out. We were two of them.
We looked all over the country for our next chapter, and Tennessee stole our hearts during a scouting trip there. Nashville’s music scene is incredible, the food is out of this world, and the people? Beyond nice. If you’ve seen our TV show, you know our neighbour. He’s the genuine article—a salt-of-the-earth guy who’s always willing to lend a hand.
That’s Tennessee in a nutshell. It’s the complete opposite of what you get in California, where it sometimes feels like everyone’s just out for themselves.
Tennessee also gets 50 inches of rain a year, which means we always have water. That’s great for growing food, and the climate? Let’s just say it’s warm enough that I can run around naked on the farm most of the year. Of course, there are ticks to deal with—I’ve found them in some very... interesting places—but hey, it’s all part of the adventure.
* Tell us about your diet? A typical day's food
Because of my hectic travel schedule, my diet isn’t always hyper consistent, but I try to keep it simple and focus on large amounts of high-quality animal protein. Funny story—I once had a doctor tell me I’d never eat beef again as long as I lived due to a beef allergy. Looking back, and knowing what I know now, I should have reported him to the medical board for that ridiculous advice. I deprived myself of beef for almost a decade, and now it’s a staple in my diet.
Most days, it’s beef, sweet potatoes, blueberries, and cheese. I love cheese. It might not always agree with my stomach, but a life without cheese is one I don’t want to live.
For me, diet is about performance and health. I fuel my body to keep up with everything I do, from running companies to homesteading to travelling nonstop, but at the end of the day, I eat to live, not the other way around. That said, when I do indulge, it’s worth it. Life’s too short to skip the good stuff.
* For all the Loaded male readers out there (99% of our audience), can you share 3 tips to keep the wife happy this January?
Keeping your wife happy isn’t about grand gestures—it’s about intention, effort, and making her feel truly seen and valued. Here are three game-changing tips to set the tone for your relationship this January and beyond:
1. Set the year—and your life—up for success.
Want to make your wife fall in love with you all over again? Schedule a meeting with her to talk about her goals and desires for the new year. Write them down and make a plan to help her achieve them. Evan and I do this twice a year, and it’s the single greatest thing we’ve ever done for our relationship. It sets the tone for our life, helps us grow as individuals and as a couple, and ensures we’re always working toward something meaningful—together. It’s not just about the “what,” but the how. When your wife sees you committed to her growth and happiness, I promise your relationship will improve 10x.
2. Give her a massage—the right way.
Let’s shift gears to something a little more immediate. If she’s feeling overwhelmed or stressed, plan a massage night. But this isn’t about throwing some lotion on her back and calling it a day. Create a spa-like experience: candles, soft music, high-quality massage oil. Watch a YouTube video to learn proper techniques and spend an entire hour focused on her. And here’s the key—no strings attached. When you make her feel cared for without expecting anything in return, you’ll build intimacy and trust in a way that goes far beyond physical touch. And trust me, when it’s her idea to invite you back to the bedroom, it’s worth the wait.
3. Prioritise play.
Life moves fast, and stress can pile up quickly. That’s why it’s crucial to make time for fun. What do you two love doing together? What makes her light up? Whether it’s hiking, dancing, trying a new restaurant, or yes, sex—schedule it into your lives and commit to it. Play isn’t just about having fun—it’s about reconnecting and keeping the spark alive. Make no excuses. When you prioritise joy and intimacy in your relationship, everything else falls into place.
The bottom line? A happy wife isn’t about guessing what she wants—it’s about showing up, being intentional, and making her feel like she’s the most important part of your world. Do these three things, and I guarantee this will be your best year yet.
* Working for financial freedom. What exactly is "freedom" to you and can anyone really do it? Give us a kickstart for 2025 for those terrified to take off the 9-5 shackles and run
Financial freedom, to me, is the ability to do almost everything you want without having to delay gratification for economic reasons. I say almost because we have to accept that human wants are infinite while resources—like time and money—are finite. You’re never going to be able to do everything in one lifetime, and that means every choice has an opportunity cost. Choosing A means you can’t choose B, and that’s the simple part.
The more complex part is the world we live in now and where it’s heading. AI is going to render many jobs obsolete, and if you’re still relying on a traditional 9-to-5 job, you need to think about where the puck is going. The Small Business Administration says over a trillion dollars in small businesses will change hands in the next decade, most of them service-based businesses like roofing and painting companies. Those jobs won’t disappear because they rely on skilled labour, and they’ll always be in demand.
I’ve built financial freedom through multiple revenue streams. Yes, I have an OnlyFans account, but I’ve used that income to invest in real businesses. I’ve launched a franchise for painting and roofing—email me if you’re interested!—and I’ve created residual income through my olive oil brand (Immortal Products), Modern Homestead Tallow, and innovative green building materials like thermal batteries and Suber Shield. These businesses allow me to make money anywhere in the world.
But let me be clear—it’s not easy. There’s no quick hack, and I couldn’t have done it without the help and support of the right people by my side. Financial freedom takes relentless work, planning, and adaptability. For those of you looking to break free from the 9-to-5, start by thinking about where the opportunities are now and where they’ll be in five years. The path won’t be easy, but it will be worth it. You just have to take that first step and be radially ok with uncertainty.
