When you think of Miss England, you might picture glitzy gowns, tiaras, and a whirlwind of public appearances. And while that’s all part of the gig, what you might not expect is me, knee-deep in wagging tails and tiny paws, trying desperately not to smuggle an entire kennel of dogs into my car.
That’s exactly what happened when I visited RSPCA Cornwall, one of the region’s and my local most vital animal rescue centres.
If you’ve ever seen those sad, slow-motion charity adverts with trembling puppies and wide-eyed kittens, I can confirm—it’s all heartbreakingly real. But here’s the good news: thanks to the dedication of the RSPCA team here in Cornwall, and around the country these animals are getting top-tier care, love, and a second chance at the lives they deserve.
Unwanted But Never Unloved
The RSPCA takes in animals for all sorts of reasons. Some are abandoned, some rescued from cruelty, and others come from homes that, for whatever reason, can’t keep them anymore. It’s not their fault they’ve ended up here, but you can see in their eyes that they just want one thing—a person to love.
From big, dopey Labradors to tiny, mischievous kittens, every animal here has a story. Some are a little nervous, some are bouncing off the walls with excitement, and some are just happy for a cuddle. What’s undeniable is the amount of love and effort the staff pour into their care. Every wagging tail and contented purr is proof that these animals aren’t just being housed; they’re being healed, reassured, and prepared for their next adventure—hopefully, into someone’s home.
Why Adopt, Not Shop?
I get it—scrolling through pictures of designer puppies online is tempting. But here’s the thing: while people are spending thousands on the latest “trendy” breeds, thousands more perfectly wonderful animals are sitting in rescue centres, waiting for a home.
Adopting isn’t just about giving an animal a second chance—it’s about giving yourself the most rewarding, tail-wagging, purring, zoomies-filled friendship of your life.
The RSPCA makes sure every pet is fully vet-checked, vaccinated, and often microchipped before they leave, so you’re not just getting a new best friend—you’re getting one who’s healthy and ready to love you forever. Plus, rehoming fees are way lower than buying from a breeder, and you’re not contributing to the overbreeding issue that leads so many pets into shelters in the first place.
My Not-So-Secret Plan to Adopt (and Fundraise!)
If I could’ve smuggled them all out under my sash, believe me, I would have. But I’ll be doing the next best thing—raising awareness, fundraising, and, hopefully, adopting my own little fur baby soon. Because as much as I love the ocean, every surfer girl needs a four-legged beach buddy to run alongside the waves with, right?
So, if you’re thinking about getting a pet—visit your local rescue first. There’s a kennel or cattery full of wagging tails and hopeful eyes just waiting for you. And trust me, the love you’ll get back? Absolutely priceless.
