One for the LoaDADS: Why Facial Fluff is a Must

Having referred to the new Loaded as LoaDAD, original Loaded founder James Brown does have a point. We’ve all grown up, we’re old and half grey now and we’ve most likely lost a sense of what’s actually cool. Let us help you out. First off, ditch the Bic and let’s get down to beardedness.

Scientists have reported In the journal of Evolution & Human Behavior that women prefer men with beards and heavy stubble when looking for long-term partners and judging men’s fathering abilities. The researchers asked 8,520 women, aged 18 to 100, to rate photos of men (some with facial hair and some without) on physical attractiveness and on a spectrum of “relationship longevity.” Out of those women, 8,520 of them (yes, all of them) preferred men with some amount of facial hair*.

With this in mind, renowned beard transplant surgeon, Dr Balwi from Elithair has analysed some of our favourite clean shaven, male celebrities with facial hair to judge whether a beard actually suits them and the results may surprise you…

Why Facial Fluff is a Must

Mark Zuckerberg appeared, with a beard recently. The photoshopped snap went viral and his wife went looking for her husband. Meanwhile, women started falling at his feet.

Loaded had a laugh sticking bum fluff on a few more unwilling celebs and letting Dr Balwi judge their new look. Here they are- probably for your wife’s viewing pleasure.

Timothée Chalamet

Reddit users have recently taken to the platform to discuss Timothée Chalamet’s model-esque bone structure and prominent features such as his sharp chin and jaw line.

Dr Balwi’s verdict:

“Timothée Chalamet’s most attractive facial features become hidden by a beard and detract from his overall youthful and boyish appearance. Timothée Chalamet has a square face shape which is usually complimented by facial hair to bestow greater balance. If he were to grow a beard or facial hair, round or triangular styles that are frequently maintained through regular grooming would suit his features more, otherwise he is best suited to a clean-shaven look”.

Eddie Redmayne

Eddie Redmayne was heralded one of the best dressed men at this year’s Met Gala, alongside wife Hannah Bagshawe, as the pair walked the red carpet in matching Steve O Smith outfits.

Redmayne has always sported a clean-shaven look after stating on the US show, Watch What Happens Live in 2018 that he can’t grow a beard due to experiencing patchy beard growth. But can the award-winning actor even pull off the patchy look?

Dr Balwi’s verdict:

“Unfortunately, patchy beard growth is just in our genetics, similar to hereditary hair loss. A patchy beard can be the result of male Hypogonadism, the inability to produce enough of the hormone testosterone that plays a vital role in masculine growth. Low testosterone levels result in the facial hair follicles not being stimulated, resulting in patchy beard growth.

The autoimmune disease, Alopecia Areata, can also target facial hair – it’s then called Alopecia Areata Barbae. This condition causes bald patches within your beard because your body’s immune system mistakenly attacks your hair follicles.

Whilst it’s unclear why Eddie Redmayne suffers from growing a patchy beard, facial hair does suit his face shape as well as that more full beard style”.

Barry Keoghan

Barry Keoghan has been leaving Saltburn viewers hot under the collar since the release of the film late last year and since then, fans can’t get enough. Labelled the ‘marmite leading man’ by the MailOnline this year,  users have taken to Reddit to debate whether he should be considered a Hollywood hunk. However, do the scales tip in his favour when sporting facial hair…

Dr Balwi’s verdict:

“Barry can pull off either a clean-shaven look or a more full beard. As he styles his hair with spiky texture and a high fade this naturally lends itself more to a clean shaven appearance. If he were to grow a beard, due to his oval face shape, he’d suit a viking beard, as depicted in the photograph above that’s a more fuller style, or three-day stubble”.

Nicholas Galitzine

Man of the hour, Nicholas Galitzine, is storming the headlines after his debut alongside Anne Hathaway in this year’s romcom, The Idea of You. The English actor famously sports a clean shaven look but could a beard elevate his appearance further?

Dr Balwi’s verdict:

“Similar to Barry, Nicholas also has an oval face shape which lends itself well to groomed stubble or fuller beard styles such as the Viking. Growing a beard would really change Nicholas’ overall appearance and look which is currently more distinguished compared to the more rugged look with a beard.

Jude Law

Following the Met Gala, Jude Law has made headlines for flying the flag for men over fifty and looking good while doing so. His downplayed, polished look has been described as old school Hollywood glamour. So, could Jude Law pull off a more grown out beard or could this hamper his ageless style

Dr Balwi’s verdict:

“With a heart shaped face, cheekbones and jawline tend to measure smaller than the forehead, coming to a more angled point at the chin. Beard styles that suit this face shape are the beardstache, Garibaldi or a full beard, as shown in the photograph above. Styles that carry more volume add bulk to the bottom of the face, giving that person the appearance of a heavier set jaw that can be described as a more masculine feature. Jude Law suits both a clean-shaven look or a full beard”.
