SPF SOS

SPF SOS

Most of us put more effort into choosing the latest McDonald’s meal deal into picking the right sun cream. Sorry to be sexist here, but unless you’re a woman, you’re likely to just pick the one on offer or rely on the Mrs, right? (Apologies in advance if this isn’t you!)

It’s time to pay attention to your SPF aka Sun Protection Factor, i.e the thing between you and looking like streaky bacon…especially if you work in the city and your face is the only thing getting any colour. If you want to look less craggy, and more well-rested and bronze (not beetroot) the right SPF will make a big difference.

Daily SPF not only protects against sun damage, which is one of the biggest culprits behind premature ageing, but also helps maintain skin’s texture, tone, and elasticity over time.

What does SPF actually do?

SPF is a number that tells you how long you can stay in the sun without burning. For example, if you’re the kind of person who goes red in 10 minutes (ginger gene anyone?) without sunscreen, SPF 30 theoretically gives you 30 times that aka 300 minutes of protection.

Interesting beauty editor fact: Yes, there is a difference between SPF 30 and SPF 50, but it’s not as big as many people think.

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures how much UVB radiation is blocked by the sunscreen: SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays. SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB rays. So, SPF 50 provides only about 1% more UVB protection than SPF 30.

Mineral vs Chemical Sunscreen

When it comes to SPF, there are two main types: chemical and mineral. They both protect your skin from UV damage, but they work in different ways and suit different needs.

Chemical sunscreens absorb into the skin and then absorb UV rays, converting them into heat and releasing them from the body. Usually they’re lightweight, can smell kind of chemically (P20 anyone?) they go on clear, and apply easily. They’re for everyday use, especially if you want something invisible and easily absorbing under clothing or on facial hair. Some chemical filters can cause irritation for sensitive skin. A few ingredients (like oxybenzone) have raised environmental as well as health concerns, some studies have shown that oxybenzone can mimic estrogen or interfere with hormone function (woke brigade please don’t come at me!) but the information and studies are there…

Chemical sunscreen does not work immediately, it typically needs about 15 to 30 minutes to become effective after application.

Mineral Sunscreen (also called physical sunscreen). It sits on top of your skin and reflects UV rays. It acts more like a shield than a sponge. It tends to be thicker and can leave a white cast or slightly tinted layer, though modern formulas have improved a lot. Truth? It does take longer to apply and can be a bit chalky in application (not always). It’s best for sensitive skin, outdoor activities, and people looking for more natural options, even ‘reef safe’ formulas (although personally I think all of them could potentially pose issues.

It starts working immediately after application and is less likely to cause irritation.

Which one should you go for?

If you just want something easy, invisible, and fast-absorbing: go chemical. If you have sensitive skin, just like the idea of your sunscreen fighting UV rays like Jason Statham: go mineral.

Either way – use it. Your future self (and your skin/dermatologist) will thank you.
