A Kick in the Ballots
Tired of the same old tripe from some of our esteemed politicians? If so, a new single from Indie rock band Beldon Haigh may put a smile back on your face.
With the General Election now in full swing, the Scot-based songsters have released what's being billed as a banger of a satirical political anthem. The song and video, entitled 'Elected', is a tapestry of pop, rock, punk and narrative story-telling, which immediately engages the listener with the catchy lyric, 'All I hear is blah, blah, blah'.
The video delivers a humorous take on the election, whilst capturing the nation's general disillusionment with politics and politicians of all persuasions. The song includes the immortal line, 'I don't wanna be inspected, I just want to get elected.'
Keep an eye out too for Donald Trump and 'Kim Jung Un' in guitar and Putin on drums!

The mischievous vocals are sure to be a hit with live audiences during a series of residency gigs by the Scots-based band at Edinburgh's celebrated Whistle Binkies music bar during the forthcoming Fringe Festival in August. Whilst the song contains themes of a general disillusionment with politics and politicians of all persuasions, the band are still keen to encourage people to vote for the party of their choice.
“Politicians need to persuade us that they and their parties are worth voting for, that they are deserving of our support,” said the band's frontman and songwriter Justin Skelton.
"Everywhere you look there is a new crisis, but instead of addressing real issues we hear the same old tropes and platitudes and too many politicians use the same old tired tactics and dog whistles. If you hear nothing but the usual 'Blah, blah, blah' when a politician is talking – then that's a sure sign they are not addressing things that really matter to you. However, it's never been more important to make your voice heard, so use your vote however you see fit."
The song was recorded by Beldon Haigh days ago, but most of the words, melody and riffs were written by Skelton decades ago, and recorded and performed by Falkirk band the Breakfast Boyz at that time. This 2024 version was upgraded and re-worked for the current election.
Whilst there is an enchanting quaintness to some of the lyrics and a few 1980’s pop hallmarks, it is uncanny how relevant and poignant the song still is today. The live video is powerful, energetic and funny and shows a would-be politician canvassing for votes in Falkirk High Street. The video features the insanely realistic masks created by US artist Landon Meier, depicting Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and Kim Jong-un, in a pop and rock band of tyranny, combined with an election song for the fictional “Moon on a Stick Party".
Throughout the campaigning and inevitable bad-tempered sparring of political parties over the coming weeks, Beldon Haigh hope that the song brings everyone a little bit of joy and laughter.
Beldon Haigh: Elected. Lyrics
All I hear is blah blah, blah, all I hear is blah, blah, blah
A flower in your buttonhole enhances your opinion poll . You’re the guy who must be seen in every woman’s magazine
Inspiring with confidence, retiring past decadence. I don’t wanna be dejected, I just want to get Elected
Elected, and I know that you wanna be protected. And I know that they made you feel rejected and they let you down
You were lost and now you're found, Vote for me and I’ll turn it around. One day I’ll control this town
I walk down the busy street and I smile at everyone I meet
I walk down the busy street and I smile at everyone I meet. Clamping down on drugs and vices, I speak out on rising prices
I’m sharper than a razor blade and only taxes I avoid. I don’t wanna be inspected, I just want to get elected.
When you're trodden down. Your patience has all run out. Broke your shell. Turn your anger in on itself.
Trodden down, your patience has all run out. Broke your shell. Turn your anger in on yourself.
Now people you know what you need to do.
I will give you everything you want. Your freedom back, dignity back, country back, money back, give you a brand new start, moon on a stick and mend your broken heart.
All I hear is blah blah blah, all I hear is blah, blah, blah.
