Fred Spanner’s Guide to… The Oasis Comeback
So it’s finally happening. They’re back. A “world tour” with dates in Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh, and Dublin will take place between the 4th of July and the 17th of August next year. So, not quite All Around The World.
They’ve kissed and made up (for reportedly £100 million) and the band is getting back together. Liam, Noel, and …some others. Yes, we know the Gallagher brothers are the backbone of Oasis, but die-hard fans are already screaming for the original band members to join them on stage, too. Otherwise, it’s more like “Oas-ish”.
At the time of writing it’s unsure who will make up the remainder of the band. The High Flying Birds, Andy Bell (probably the one from Erasure), Gem Archer, Alan White, Bonehead, and Tony McCarroll are all being talked about. No word on Patsy Kensit yet, but we’ll keep you posted.
To be fair, Oasis had more line-up changes than Atomic Kitten, a band I’m still awaiting my call-up papers for. Whoever joins the brothers on stage, there’s no denying these are going to be proper events.
And you can expect there to be plenty of tribute bands forming to lap up the overspill from punters who couldn’t get tickets. Remember “No Way Sis”? Expect more of that. If your name’s Joseph, go right ahead. “Joe Asis” is all yours. After hearing how much the Gallagher brothers are getting for this tour, even the government is allegedly getting in on the act to try to wipe out the national debt. “Starmer Might Say” is coming your way in 2025.
My first taste of Oasis was watching them blast out Supersonic on The Word. They played it live, and it totally blew me away. What was this wizardry? While Blur, Suede, and Pulp were doing their art school Britpop thing, Oasis crashed the party with a casual sneer, and a “Hold my jacket”. They arrived- and departed the scene- like a whirlwind.
So what of their history? Their debut album Definitely Maybe was the fastest-selling debut album ever, at the time, knocking Steps’ album Cheese For The Masses off the top spot (probably). (What's the Story) Morning Glory? followed quickly in 1995, picking up new drummer Alan White along the way, and Be Here Now smashed all records by becoming the fastest-selling album in UK chart history. Yeah, they were a big deal back then.
75 million record sales later, Noel decided “Enough is enough”. He walked away just before a performance at a festival near Paris.
The famous feuds weren’t all behind the scenes. Tensions were starting to appear on stage years before the split. Things came to a head in 2009 when Noel accused his brother of having a hangover that forced them to cancel a concert. Liam disputed the accusation and sued, later dropping the lawsuit. Brotherly love, eh?
Their solo projects in between proved there was still a demand for the Gallagher’s work, but how many Beady Eye or High Flying Birds fans were secretly wishing they were at an Oasis gig instead?
So the tickets were released on Saturday 31st August. Die-hard fans were told they were number 262,367 or so in the queue, and waited for so long, the band had time to split up and reform six times before they finally got to the front.
But Don’t Look Back In Anger. We’ve got stadium concerts to look forward to.
Surely we can expect some new music too? Maybe a duet with Blur? The sight of Liam Gallagher and Damon Albarn holding hands, singing All You Need Is Love would bring the fucking house down.
But I’m speculating, and the time for that is over. Now it’s time to brush down the parka, stick on the shades, and enjoy the sunshiiiine.
There’s a year to go and let’s face it, lads, it could still all go tits up.
But let’s be optimistic about this. Yeah, it’s happening. Definitely…maybe.
