Car Seat Headrest: The Scholars ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Five years. That’s how long it’s been since Car Seat Headrest dropped anything new. Most bands would come back with a safe bet. Not these lads. Will Toledo and co have gone full mad-genius and churned out a rock opera.
Set in a fictional uni called Parnassus, it’s part concept album, part fever dream, possibly scribbled together during one of Toledo’s Long Covid brain spirals. You can practically hear the paracetamol fizzing.
Lyrically, it’s like rummaging through a medical journal during a come-down. You’ve got vivid dreamscapes, bodily weirdness, and more than a few “wait, what?” moments. But it works.
Every track brings something new to the table, and it’s one of those albums where the more spins you give it, the more odd little gems you dig up.
Nice job.
