Mystery Jets: A Hole To See The Sky Through

Mystery Jets have never been the sort of band to do things by the book, and A Hole to See the Sky Through finds them once again rummaging around in the musical dressing-up box. But beneath the eccentricity there’s a proper collection of songs here. Black Sage has the attitude, Doomsday Waltz brings the drama, and Flea Joint injects some much-needed grubby fun.
The emotional stuff is never far away, either. Long Lonely Road and Soul River give the album its bruised heart.
The whole thing is tied together by the album’s fixation with perspective: the idea that sometimes you don’t need to change your life. You just find a different window to look through. It’s a neat concept.
One thing you can always be sure of with Mystery Jets is that the band puts its heart and soul into every track they create, and this album is no different. In fact, we’d go as far as to say it’s one of the best albums we’ve heard all year. It’s a smart and scruffy offering from a group still willing to take the scenic route.
