FRESH FRUIT OVERTAKES SCOTCH EGGS AS BRITS RETHINK WORLD CUP SNACKING

Fresh fruit is set to beat Scotch eggs as one of Britain's most popular World Cup snacks this summer, according to new research revealing a major shift in match-day eating habits.

A poll of 2,000 UK adults found that more than a quarter (27%) plan to snack on fresh fruit while watching the tournament, making it more popular than Scotch eggs (21%), pork scratchings (12%) and even hummus with vegetables (13%).

The findings suggest Britain's traditional football-food culture could be changing, with millions looking for lighter and healthier options as they settle in for weeks of World Cup action.

In fact, nearly a quarter (22%) say they will actively try to eat healthier during the tournament, and expect to spend an average of more than 71 hours watching coverage.

Classic football favourites still dominate, with normal bags of crisps (39%), share-size crisps (35%) and sausage rolls (35%) topping the list.

But the research, commissioned by Aagrah Foods, found that many fans are broadening their tastes beyond traditional match-day fare.

One in three (29%) say they plan to experiment with more adventurous flavours during the tournament, while one in five (20%) admit they have become bored of the same football snacks year after year.

Global-inspired foods are increasingly finding a place alongside classic favourites, with fans planning to tuck into sushi (9%), falafel bites (7%), protein balls (6%) and lentil or chickpea crisps (6%).

Shakil Hussain, Co-Founder of Aagrah Foods, said: "Major football tournaments have become huge food occasions in their own right. "People still enjoy traditional snacks, but we're seeing a growing appetite for lighter options, sharing foods and more adventurous flavours. Fans should try glazing pineapple or mango slices with chutney then adding it to the BBQ for a real pop of fruity, sweet deliciousness with a hint of spice!”

"Fans increasingly want food that feels like part of the occasion rather than simply something to nibble on while the match is on."

The research also found Britain is entering the tournament with limited confidence in England's chances. Almost two-thirds (65%) do not believe England will win the World Cup. Despite that pessimism, football nostalgia remains strong. England's 1966 World Cup triumph was voted the nation's most iconic World Cup memory (22%), ahead of Diego Maradona's infamous "Hand of God" goal against England in 1986 (15%).
