World Cup Legends, Lego Houses and Sheep ‘Liaisons’: The 10 Most Bizarre Football Contract Clauses

The FIFA World Cup 2026 is officially underway, running from 11 June to 19 July, and football fever has already taken hold.

England face Croatia, Ghana and Panama in Group L, with Thomas Tuchel’s side hoping to fight their way into the tournament’s first-ever round of 32.

But football’s strangest stories do not always happen on the pitch.

With the Premier League summer transfer window now open, clubs are working behind the scenes to secure new signings. Sometimes that means offering extraordinary benefits. Other times, it means inserting clauses designed to make a player almost impossible to buy.

Beecham Peacock Solicitors takes a look at ten of the most bizarre football contract clauses ever agreed.

1. Lionel Messi: The Catalonia Clause

Lionel Messi is appearing at a record sixth World Cup with Argentina this year.

When he signed a new Barcelona contract in 2017, Messi reportedly agreed to integrate fully into Catalan culture, including learning the language and representing the identity of the club.

However, the deal also allowed him to become a free agent if Catalonia ever gained independence.

2. Cristiano Ronaldo: The €1 Billion Release Clause

Release clauses are common in football. A €1 billion clause is rather less ordinary.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid contract reportedly included the astronomical figure, but club president Florentino Pérez admitted it was never intended to be paid.

Instead, it was designed to deter rival clubs from attempting to sign one of Madrid’s greatest-ever players.

When Ronaldo eventually left for Juventus in 2018, the effective asking price was considerably lower at around €120 million.

3. Neymar: The Fortnightly Friends Clause

When Barcelona signed Neymar, the club reportedly agreed to fly a group of his closest friends from Brazil to Spain every two weeks.

Known as “The TOISS”, Neymar’s inner circle formed an important part of his life away from football.

Barcelona apparently agreed to cover the travel costs to help their young star settle in Spain and avoid becoming homesick.

4. Ronaldinho: The Nightclub Clause

Ronaldinho was almost as famous for his nightlife as he was for his football.

When the Brazilian legend joined Flamengo in 2011, he reportedly had a clause written into his contract allowing him to go out partying twice a week.

Most managers try to keep their players away from nightclubs. Ronaldinho apparently negotiated access to them.

5. Stefan Schwarz: The Space Travel Ban

One of football’s strangest clauses belonged to former Sunderland midfielder Stefan Schwarz.

After the player expressed an interest in commercial space travel, Sunderland reportedly added a condition to his contract banning him from leaving Earth’s atmosphere.

The club feared an extraterrestrial accident might cost them a valuable player.

Football contracts cover plenty of risks. Space travel is rarely one of them.

6. Keisuke Honda: The Armoured Car Clause

When Japanese star Keisuke Honda joined Brazilian side Botafogo, he reportedly requested an armoured vehicle as part of the deal.

Honda was concerned about his personal safety while living in Rio de Janeiro and would only agree to sign after the club promised him additional protection.

A company car is standard. An armoured one is slightly more memorable.

7. Giuseppe “Billy” Reina: The Lego House Clause

When striker Giuseppe “Billy” Reina joined Arminia Bielefeld, he reportedly requested that the club build him a new house for every year he remained with the team.

Unfortunately, he failed to specify the size or type of house.

The club allegedly responded by presenting him with houses made from Lego.

The joke continued for several seasons before Reina reportedly pursued legal action, with the dispute eventually settled out of court.

Always read the small print.

8. Dennis Bergkamp: The No-Fly Clause

Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp became known as “The Non-Flying Dutchman” because of his severe fear of flying.

Bergkamp reportedly accepted a £100,000 reduction in his wages to have a no-fly clause inserted into his Arsenal contract.

The arrangement meant he missed several European away matches that could not reasonably be reached by road or rail.

Bergkamp later recalled:

“In talks with Arsenal, if I said ‘a million’, they automatically deducted a hundred grand because you don’t fly. And I accepted that.”

9. Neil “Razor” Ruddock: The Weight Penalty Clause

When Neil Ruddock joined Crystal Palace in 2000, chairman Simon Jordan was reportedly concerned about the defender’s weight.

A clause was added to Ruddock’s contract imposing a 10% wage reduction whenever he exceeded the agreed limit of 99.8kg.

Ruddock later admitted the penalty was triggered eight times during his spell at the club.

That is one expensive trip to the buffet.

10. Spencer Prior: The Sheep ‘Liaison’ Clause

Spencer Prior’s contract with Cardiff City reportedly included several unusual demands involving Welsh traditions.

The defender was required to eat sheep’s testicles, sheep’s brain and raw liver.

More controversially, the contract also mentioned a “physical liaison with a sheep”.

The phrase caused a media storm, but the liaison eventually amounted to Prior giving a sheep a polite pat. The unusual menu, however, was real.

He genuinely ate the testicles.

Football Contracts Are Stranger Than Fiction

From billion-euro release clauses to Lego houses and bans on space travel, football contracts can be every bit as entertaining as the action on the pitch.

Some clauses protect clubs. Others keep players happy. A few appear to exist purely because football has always attracted magnificent levels of madness.

Which of these bizarre contract clauses surprised you most?
