To mark the launch, the FORCE BLUE team returned to the 100 Yards of Hope site, a coral restoration area off the coast of Miami, where the group and its partners planted five years ago to coax a battered stretch of ocean back to life. On the project's fifth anniversary, divers, scientists, and explorers slipped beneath the surface to take stock.
The veterans called this first stage RECON, borrowing the language of the field they once served in. Their task was to survey the coral they had helped plant and support the scientists, recording which colonies were thriving, which were struggling, and which had not survived. It was hours of meticulous and precise work, and the data it produced is exactly what the continued restoration depends on.
